  • The Department of Microbiology is functioning since the inception of medical college (2005). 

  • The Department has progressed with time and presently it has 1 Professor, 1 Assistant professor and 3 Tutors headed by Prof. Dr. G. Sucila Thangam.

  • The department includes Bacteriology, Serology, Parasitology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology and Virology Laboratories for routine microbiological/immunological investigations. 

  • The Department is also involved in assessing the surgical theatre sterility of government and private hospitals in Theni district.

  • The Department plays an important role in detecting and controlling outbreaks of fever & acute diarrheal diseases.

  • The department is also the part of Infection control program and Bio Medical Waste Management program of the hospital.

  • The Department also motivates MBBS student to involve in various short term Research Projects and also offers Laboratory Training.

  • The Department is recognized as State Reference Laboratory for HIV/AIDS and conducting periodical training programs on HIV/AIDS for the Medical officers and Laboratory technicians of Theni, Dindigul & Karur districts. 

  • The laboratory service provided by qualified technical staff is supervised by well experienced Clinical Microbiologists. We undertake teaching, diagnostic as well as research activities.

  • Around 10 Research articles are published every year in national and international journals.

  • The Department starts several research projects such as VRDL, STI, Stat Up Grant, IDSP, TNSCST, SSH and TANSACS have been undertaken. 

  • The Department of Microbiology was sanctioned for Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) under the scheme “Establishment of a network of Laboratories for managing epidemics and Natural Calamities” by ICMR in September 2014.

  • The Department processed approximately > 10, 00, 000 samples (including COVID-19 testing) for the diagnosis of various viral infections; mainly contributed for the early detection of Dengue and COVID outbreaks.

  • During the initial phase of COVID pandemic, our laboratory is one of the two approved centers in Tamil Nadu for the diagnosis of COVID 19. 

  • Our VRDL was selected as QC/QA Lab for COVID testing and we have been assigned to monitor the performance of 43 COVID testing labs across the southern part of Tamil Nadu.

  • Infrastructure is available for participating in ICTC (Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre for HIV) and RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme).

  • During 2020, Prepared more than >200 litres of hand sanitizers and distributed through DDHS for public use.

  • During 2020, prepared >10,000 tubes of VTM and distributed to DDHS for samples collection.

  • The Department conducting Workshop on Viral Diagnostic for every year in Post Graduate students.

  • The Department conducting Many Training Programs on HIV/AIDS for the Medical Officers and Laboratory Technicians of Theni, Dindigul & Karur districts under the patronage of NACO & TANSACS.

  • The Department conducting CME on “Opportunez – 09: Opportunistic Infections in Immunocompromised” organized in association with IAMM (TN & PY chapter) & The TN Dr. MGR Medical University on 25th July 2009.
